I was amazed that after 33 years as a teacher I had never heard of therapeutic metaphors for children – and their efficacy. It wasn’t until I studied consciousness further [upon training as a Consulting Hypnotist] that I found out about healing stories for children – therapeutic metaphors.

My approach focuses on the use of story/image/metaphor to help the child’s subconscious health, and the belief that the subconscious will always seek healthy balance and the best for the child. This stem's from the concepts of Dr. Milton Erickson M.D. As a psychiatrist and foremost hypnotherapist of the twentieth century he has left a legacy of knowledge regarding hypnosis and the subconscious. As he said - ‘trust the unconscious’.

I focus strongly on using Erickson’s techniques and find them extremely effective in recordings and scripts. They are truly client centred in that often they do not indicate what the subconscious should do to make the change. Rather they create the structure for the subconscious to work within and heal, change, or improve. The subconscious chooses the time and manner of the change.

I believe that if more people in medicine and education used these techniques with children, and developed them further, we would eradicate ADD, ADHD, low self-esteem, fears, emotionally generated physical conditions…….and the list would expand.
